Introduction to SPSS Online

This workshop is primarily aimed at Masters students who will be using SPSS as part of their dissertation, but who have never used SPSS before or have very little experience with it. You are also welcome to attend if it’s been a while since you used SPSS and you’d like a refresher on the basics. A very basic knowledge of statistics is assumed.

In this workshop we will discuss some of the basic features of SPSS. We will familiarise ourselves with the SPSS interface and some of its key features, such as the data view and variable view tabs. We will discuss the different types of variables in SPSS, and discover how to import data from Excel into SPSS in the proper way. We will finish by beginning the process of analysing the data by calculating descriptive statistics and tests for normality. As this is an introductory session, we will not cover any further hypothesis testing methods such as comparing means or regression analysis.

The workshop will run online over Microsoft Teams. To get the most out of it you are encouraged to have SPSS running on your machine so you can follow along with the exercises. You can access SPSS from anywhere using the University’s AppsAnywhere service:

https://www.its.qmul.ac.uk/services/students/appsanywhere/

Please make sure you can get SPSS working on your laptop ahead of the session.
